This is a poem I wrote based off of a conversation I had with a friend about how sometimes our lives feel like a never ending dream and we reach for things that we will never be able to have. How we scream but it feels like nothing comes out or no one hears us. This is just a poem about life sometimes.

I can’t break free from this dream
I can see the end, it’s so close
I’m running, chasing, pursuing
I scream but nothing comes out, not even a shout
I need to wake up from this reality

Our world is filled with horrible, sad and unjust things, war in Iraq, war in Georgia, aids in Africa, poverty, nations hating one another, I could go on for hours maybe even days of all the horrid things people have to face on a daily basis. Yet with all this I still can’t help but look out for number one, little oh me. I am a firm believer that selfishness is the number one cause of apathy, discontentment, and depression among people today.

It’s this selfishness that keeps us longing for more. More of what, we don’t really care as long as it’s something that makes us happy either momentarily or for a longer period of time. It’s this same selfishness that keeps us from caring about world affairs and keeps us worried about our own lives “love affairs.” I’m part of the problem I confess, but the time has come to stop living in this state of “me” and start living in the stat of “us”, the people of the world.

For years comparisons have been made by following either/or logic. For example, there are two types of people in this world those who x and those who y. Categorizing is what we do and this is why when it comes to personality traits there are “pessimist” (the negative people) and “optimist” (the positive people.) Of course I don’t feel that I fit into either of these two categories I feel that I am the pessimistic optimist.

I’m the sarcastic cynic who comes off as evil yet inside there is always optimism. Once you get to know me you’ll see that I find that good in the situation. For this reason I call myself the pessimistic optimist. I think everyone should have a bit of optimism in them and everyone probably does they just hid it to look like “the tough guy.” I’ll let you in on a little secret, it’s not worth it. Be yourself.
